This stairway and the stairway on Sunset Drive Stairway have always held a special place for me. After my second attempt at living in Los Angeles, I moved to a small house on Sanborn Avenue, and was introduced to the stairways of Franklin Hills. In a city where no one walked, it seemed so special and strange to have an area with a network of Stairways. I helped make a very un-human place, inviting… and I have enjoyed the stairways ever since.

No, not exactly a glamorous part of Radio Walk. Like most of the Stairway system in Silverlake and Echo Park, lacking a bit of care an maintenance by the City and the neighborhood.

Not even a Sign Post remains at the top of the Stairway as on the rest of the “Radio Walk”.

Shakespeare Bridge Public Stairway

A useful and often used stairway in Los Angeles. And with it’s proximity to Marshall High School it is well maintained, safe and an attractive short-cut for the neighborhood.

Near the base of the stairway, between Sanborn and LILA (French/American School) is a Public Garden. 15 years ago, before the Garden was put in, the fence was over-grown with the most lovely covering of Passion Flower. This is the place I firs saw this plant, and remember being amazed that any flower could have such a shape and color. It appeared more like a Lunar or Mars Landing Base designed by Syd Mead, or the likes. Being that it is rather weed-like, they cleared the area of the vine to make room for the the Public Garden.

Clayton Avenue Stairways

The Stairways and Walkways at the top of Clayton are purely good little shortcuts for the locals. Weel maintained and simple cut-throughs to bypass the zig-zags of the street.

At the top of Clayton is a pleasant pathway.

The Cumberland to Clayton Avenue Stairway is a good climb, and feels incorporated into the lives of the homes and apartments that border it.
